ok. there are things you must do and things that no one should ever do, i don't care who you are. one of the things that you should NEVER EVER EVER do is cover a Beatles tune. seriously. this is just fucking arrogant.
i can't even tell you what brought this up, because that isn't even relevant. the fact is i have been a Beatles fan since i was four and this has always been my opinion.

I think it's okay to cover good music. Gomez's cover of Getting Better for the Phillips Magnavox commercial gave it a completely new sound. A rough sothern blues voice, more twinkle to the jangle, etc. It was nice.
I say save your ire for clumsy sampling. It's okay to borrow a bit here or there, but to take a whole song and rap over it? Like Puffy did with Led Zep, or Vanilla Ice with Queen/Bowie? Well, that I find bothersome.
you are right about the fact that a good cover done well can be a great tribute to an artist or band. there's a local band in seattle who rocks Maybe Your Baby better than Stevie does. However, i must stick by my conviction that nobody should cover any Beatles song. in my humble and admittedly biased opinion "nice" isn't perfect and perfect is anything Beatles. I think we may have to agree to disagree, but i absolutely love the fact that you countered my argument with hard evidence and conviction. thanks for provoking some thought!
I don't worship the Beatles, but I understand. I'd feel the same if anyone dared to touch U2.
